Actor Lee Hyun-wook is challenging the historical drama genre through the tvN X TVING original drama ‘Won-gyeong’.
On the 26th, the production team of ‘Won-gyeong’ released an interview with Lee Hyun-wook.
‘Won-gyeong’ centers around Queen Won-gyeong (played by Cha Joo-young) who seizes power with her husband King Taejong (played by Lee Hyun-wook), and it depicts the intense hidden stories between the king, queen, husband, and wife.
The narrative of this couple, known as political partners, is newly created and interpreted from Won-gyeong’s perspective, adding to the intrigue.
Lee Hyun-wook takes on his first historical drama challenge as King Taejong, the 3rd King of Joseon, expressing that it was an honor to portray Taejong and that he felt a strong sense of responsibility, dedicating himself sincerely to the role.
Lee Hyun-wook stated, “Unlike previous works, it was interesting and refreshing to focus on the relationship between Won-gyeong and Bang-won, from Queen Won-gyeong’s perspective,” sharing his first encounter with the work.
The portrayal of Bang-won’s historical image was also highlighted from various angles, bringing the characters’ emotions and situations more to life,” said Lee Hyun-wook, adding, “Bang-won was a person who displayed excellence in many fields but had to sacrifice people through his choices.
A strong yet lonely figure who tried to protect what he must, even amidst insecurity,” he introduced the character he observed and felt. As he explained, ‘Won-gyeong’ promises a differentiated narrative by delving into the political rift that arises after the couple, known as political partners, becomes the queen and king of Joseon, and the intimate conflicts that stem from being a couple.
Hence, Lee Hyun-wook focused on the interior of Lee Bang-won.
“I contemplated how to express the character’s emotions more intricately,” he stated, explaining that he concentrated on portraying human anguish and conflict more deeply than the usual image of King Taejong we’ve seen.

- Impeachment is a must, are those guys out of their mind above?
24
46
- A participant actively engaging in political judgment and administering without being elected by the people should certainly be impeached. The revolt war is not yet over. Historically, rebels never surrendered and handed over their heads willingly. They fought and clung until their heads were cut off. Giving time to internal rebellion forces means giving them one more chance to bite.

It makes one eager to meet Lee Hyun-wook’s portrayal of Lee Bang-won, where he invested more effort into character analysis than ever before. Interestingly, he also revealed an unexpected, trivial challenge he faced during the historical drama.
It was the concern, “Will a beard suit me?”
Looking back at his filmography, his smooth and sharp jawline without a beard was a trademark for actor Lee Hyun-wook.
Nonetheless, Lee Hyun-wook expressed gratitude during the occasion, stating, “Thanks to the fantastic staff, I was able to project a luxurious appearance without feeling awkward.”
Lee Hyun-wook also shared several points of interest, mentioning, “The subtle emotional performances of each actor, the backgrounds and beautiful locations crafted with dedication by the production team, and the joy of appreciating various mise-en-scènes.”
This anticipation is also the observation point filled with love and expectations for a work shot across various locations in Korea over nearly a year.
Finally, involving the audience, Lee Hyun-wook shared his hope, “While unfolding the story from Queen Won-gyeong’s perspective, we meticulously expressed the emotions held by characters unseen until now in various ways, hoping that viewers will enjoy it and that ‘Won-gyeong’ will remain a warm memory.” ‘Won-gyeong’ will premiere its first two episodes on TVING on January 6th at 2 PM, and the first episode will be aired on tvN at 8:50 PM.
