There are reports that the production team of the Netflix animated movie ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ (Kedeheon), which gained sensational popularity with its K-Pop theme, has begun working on a sequel.
According to Bloomberg and Variety, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation recently signed a contract to produce a sequel to ‘Kedeheon’. Given the nature of animation, the production period may be extended, with a target release in 2029. If everything goes as planned, there will be a 4-year gap between the first and second installments.
Maggie Kang, the director of ‘Kedeheon’, also hinted at the possibility of a sequel in an interview with the BBC last month. At that time, Director Kang said, “I believe there is definitely more that can be done with the characters in the ‘Kedeheon’ world,” and added, “Whatever it is, it will likely be a story worth continuing in a sequel.”
‘Kedeheon’ is an adventure story where the members of the fictional K-pop group ‘Huntrix’ (Rumi, Joy, Mira) defeat evil spirits through the power of music and seal the gate known as ‘Honmun’ (魂門) to prevent spirits from entering the mortal world.
Since its release in June, the film has received surprising attention worldwide. As of the 91st day of streaming, it surpassed 300 million views, dethroning ‘Squid Game’ to become the most-watched Netflix show ever. The Original Soundtrack (OST) ‘Golden’ remained at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for eight consecutive weeks. Consequently, there is speculation about the potential for ‘Kedeheon’ to receive an Academy Award or for ‘Golden’ to win a Grammy.
