‘Home Alone’, KCC ‘Caution’ Legal Sanctions… Glamourizing Drinking Scenes

‘I Live Alone’ received legal sanctions from the Broadcasting and Communications Review Committee. On the 18th, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Review Committee) held a general meeting at the Broadcasting Center in Mok-dong, Seoul, and decided this regarding MBC’s ‘I Live Alone’ (hereinafter referred to as ‘I Live’). The Review Committee pointed out that the program ‘I Live’, which is rated for viewers aged 15 and over, glamorized drinking scenes by repeatedly airing captions such as ‘clean taste of soju’, ‘happiness filled to the brim’, and ‘throat-hitting freshness’ over several episodes. In this regard, the Review Committee stated, “Public broadcasters have a duty to inform viewers of the risks of alcohol consumption, yet this program consistently glamorizes drinking and exaggerates alcohol as if it were a panacea for fatigue.” The Review Committee’s decisions are categorized into ‘no problem’, ‘suggestion’ and ‘recommendation’ which are administrative guidance stages, and legal sanctions such as ‘caution’, ‘warning’, ‘program correction or suspension’, ‘disciplinary action for those involved’, and ‘fines’, with legal sanctions considered severe disciplinary measures. Additionally, ‘Cultwo Show Escape at Two O’Clock’ received a ‘caution’ for repeatedly promoting a sponsor’s product and inducing excessive advertising effects by having the company’s representative appear directly. KBS 1TV ‘KBS News 9’ and KBS Changwon 1TV ‘KBS News 7 Gyeongnam’, along with KBS Jinju 1TV ‘KBS News 7 Gyeongnam’, received ‘caution’ over reporting that only favored their own interests related to the separate collection of license fees. TBC ‘Live Broadcast Good Day’, which repeatedly announced the name of a hospital belonging to a hospital director through subtitles and voice, and introduced business and services planned to be established at the hospital in detail, was issued with a ‘recommendation’, as was MBN ‘MBN News Center’, which aired an interview with a legislator’s office press release as if the aide were an ordinary citizen.
