[Seoul=RNX News] Reporter Seo Yeon Jeong = JTBC’s ‘Good Boy’ is ‘good’ even by the production crew. Director Na-yeon Shim and writer Dae-il Lee, whose next works are eagerly awaited, form a trustworthy ‘director-writer’ combination.
JTBC’s new weekend drama ‘Good Boy’ (written by Dae-il Lee, directed by Na-yeon Shim, produced by SLL, Studio & New, Drama House Studio) is a comic action youth investigation drama in which medalists who became police officers through special recruitment fight against a world filled with dishonesty and unfairness, using police badges instead of medals.
Park Bo-gum, Kim So-hyun, Lee Sang-yi, Heo Sung-tae, and Tae Won-seok, who once stood on podiums with medals around their necks, now unite as detectives in a specialized crime unit to eradicate injustice.
And with just a brief description, the adrenaline is already rushing as the ‘Good Avengers’, enhanced by the national-level ‘director-writer’ Na-yeon Shim and Dae-il Lee, known for elevating the status of K-dramas, are perfectly completed.
Director Na-yeon Shim, who helmed ‘Monster’, which won the Best Drama Award in the TV category at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards, showcased her strength in scripting and visual aesthetics, making a name for herself as a rookie director like no other monster.
The subsequent drama ‘Bad Mother’, which experimented with genres to twist the theme of motherhood, remains a lifelong drama for many as a distinctive human drama. Likewise, writer Dae-il Lee remade the original ‘Life on Mars’, setting a remarkable precedent for localizing top-notch dramas.
Debuting with such a strong presence, he later drove rave reviews with ‘The Advisor’, produced in seasons 1 and 2, as a fresh Korean-style political drama infused with genres.
Director Na-yeon Shim and writer Dae-il Lee have thus made significant marks in K-drama history by capturing quality, buzz, and success.
These two representatives of Korean dramas have joined forces for ‘Good Boy’. This time, they bring a thrilling story of real-life heroes, national medalists, fighting against injustice to the small screen.
The main characters are Olympic boxing gold medalist Yun Dong-joo (Park Bo-gum), shooting gold medalist Ji Han-na (Kim So-hyun), fencing silver medalist Kim Jong-hyun (Lee Sang-yi), wrestling bronze medalist Go Man-sik (Heo Sung-tae), and discus throw bronze medalist Shin Jae-hong (Tae Won-seok), who became cops through a special recruitment.
With powerful punches, a single headshot that hits the target, sharp reflexes that pierce the heart, persistence that chokes and endures, and powerful bare hands and shoulders that can seemingly send a manhole flying, the special crime unit ‘Good Avengers’ can deliver a thrill comparable to the ‘Avengers’, who protect world peace with superpowers.
Director Na-yeon Shim and writer Dae-il Lee emphasize the strong viewing points of ‘Good Boy’ as the tension excites the anxious heart, adrenaline explodes, and the initials make you stand on end with excitement.
Director Na-yeon Shim stated, “The action, comedy, melodrama, message, and character ensemble of the former athlete-turned-policemen are tightly packed, but we plan not to flaunt that density.
We focus on fun that can be watched comfortably and with peace of mind at the end of the day,” she revealed.
The intricate weaving of relationships and the organic blending of emotion and story by writer Dae-il Lee, who noted, “Thanks to the director’s strength and delicacy, I could write confidently even with a complex genre,” raises expectations for the birth of a work that meets all viewers’ needs.
‘Good Boy’, which portrays the sweeping arrest of bad guys by a national-level special crime unit presented by a national-level director and writer, will premiere at 10:40 PM on Saturday, May 31st on JTBC and will be available worldwide via Amazon Prime Video.
