Sayuri, a Japanese-born broadcaster, who was criticized in March for refusing her son’s kindergarten homework, apologized, saying it was a “misstatement.”

On the 26th, Sayuri uploaded a video titled ‘Sayuri explains why she doesn’t make her child do homework’ on her personal YouTube channel and revealed this.

Meeting with the YouTube video production team, Sayuri acknowledged the statement video, saying, “I watched the video too, and it looked a bit shameless. Even I thought it didn’t look good.”

Regarding the situation where she expressed her intention to refuse homework, she said, “To (my son’s) teacher, I politely said ‘Please, could you?’ and the teacher also said it was okay,” but added, “I think I didn’t consider that there are also rules in kindergarten.”

She emphasized, “My son Jen has to enter elementary school in two years, and being five years old, he should definitely know the rules.”

Earlier in March, Sayuri appeared on broadcaster Jang Young-ran’s YouTube video and discussed her son’s kindergarten attendance.

At the time, she revealed, “There was homework for (my son), but I sent a letter to the teacher saying, ‘My son never does homework. I also oppose doing homework at my age. I’m proud of my son not doing homework, so please don’t send any homework to my son.’”

Netizens who came across the statement in the video criticized that not following the rules was a “nuisance.”

In the video that day, when asked about her thoughts on the fans’ criticisms, Sayuri replied, “It’s correct, and it’s my growing process, so I had a chance to reflect this time.”

She also said, “I also never did homework when I was young. I didn’t really care about rules,” adding, “I realized again that this shouldn’t be the case.”

Sayuri confessed, “(My son) shouldn’t become like me, so I hope he learns much better life and character than I did,” adding, “I want to develop the parts where I was lacking.”

It was also revealed that Sayuri’s parents, who saw the related article, pointed out, “You should do homework, otherwise you’ll turn out like you,” which elicited laughter.

Finally, she said, “I want to apologize for showing an attitude that could be misunderstood,” and then released a self-made ‘homework song’ simultaneously.

Sayuri, who is unmarried, gave birth to her son Jen in 2020 after receiving a sperm donation from a Westerner. She garnered public attention as a ‘solo mom’, which is not familiar socially.
