Director Bong Joon-ho’s film ‘Mickey 17’, produced in Hollywood, USA, has been postponed from its release in January next year to April.

On the 7th (Korean time), the US media outlet Variety reported that distributor Warner Bros. has changed the release date of ‘Mickey 17’ from January 21, 2025, to April 18. Originally, the biographical film ‘Michael’ about singer Michael Jackson was scheduled to be released on this date, but when its schedule was delayed, the distributor quickly moved up the release date of ‘Mickey 17’.

The new release date falls during the Easter period, considered a traditional peak for the US cinema market. ‘Mickey 17’ now has the potential to perform well, avoiding competition with big productions during the peak cinema season. Additionally, the delay from January to April allows for more preparation, and the film may be shown in IMAX format, according to reports.

Originally scheduled for release on March 29 this year, ‘Mickey 17′ was postponed to January next year due to a general strike by the US actors’ union, and now the date has been pushed back again. The first teaser trailer received positive responses, which reportedly gave the distributor the confidence to swiftly handle the burden of postponing the release again. The domestic release is also likely slated for April.

‘Mickey 17’ is Director Bong’s next project following ‘Parasite’ (2019), which swept Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or and won four Academy Awards. It tells the story of a cloned human involved in colonizing an ice-covered space planet. Hollywood actor Robert Pattinson and Korean-American actor Steven Yeun star in the film.

The film is an adaptation of the science fiction novel ‘Mickey 7’ by American author Edward Ashton. The novel’s original tale revolves around the cloned human Mickey7, sent to colonize the icy world of Niflheim. Director Bong decided to adapt it into a film after finding the manuscript of the unpublished novel intriguing.
