SBS The Day the Tail Bites the Tail (Kkokkomu) highlighted the ‘serial bank cash transport van hijacking incident’ on the 6th broadcast, where bank money was embezzled in just 10 seconds in front of a police station in broad daylight. The detective who solved this case was Detective Jang Young-kwon, a veteran of the violent crime division, known as the actual model of the detective played by Ma Dong-seok in the movie ‘Crime City’.
In an interview, Detective Jang stated, “I’ve been working solely as a detective for 30 years and 4 months and have solved numerous cases,” and “While investigating the Shin Chang-won case, I got entangled with about 3,000 former inmates of Cheongsong Prison. After that, when big cases went on air, I received tips that helped solve them.” Thanks to this network of information, he was called ‘Cheongsong Man’.
Then, he received a crucial tip regarding the cash transport van hijacking incident that occurred in Okcheon in 1997. Taking this opportunity, he began collecting direct evidence by utilizing informants from Cheongsong.
The initial investigation faced difficulties. While the suspect was caught, the stolen checks were revealed to have been leaked from places other than the bank, putting the case back into mystery. However, Detective Jang intuited that one check was for ‘testing’. A large-scale joint investigation started on the order of the Police Commissioner, and 39 veteran detectives, including Detective Jang, were deployed in the investigation.
While tracking the suspect Yoon, it was discovered that his acquaintances Choi and Kim were suspicious. All three had ties to Cheongsong Prison, and the net tightened. Particularly, the revelation that Choi’s alibi was fabricated provided a decisive clue.
