(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ji-heon = The Liberation Association announced on the 15th that it will produce a documentary film ‘Independence Army’ about the life of General Hong Beom-do in cooperation with the Hong Beom-do General Memorial Project.
The Liberation Association held a press conference at the Seoul Liberation Hall on the same day and explained that it plans to release the film on Liberation Day, August 15.
President Lee Jong-chan of the Liberation Association said, “The people who suggested removing the bust of General Hong Beom-do at the Korea Military Academy are the same generals involved in the martial law situation,” and mentioned, “This movie will teach the legitimacy of the army and let people know that the traditions have continued so that our country could achieve industrialization and democratization.”
Regarding the recent military move to ‘maintain the bust at the military academy,’ he pointed out, “When the world changes, won’t they ask to remove it again?” and questioned whether it was out of true respect for General Hong Beom-do’s value or just a move to avoid trouble for now.
Regarding the ‘communist controversy’ about General Hong Beom-do, Chairman Lee said, “Communism has long disappeared, and North Korea is not a communist but a royal state,” asserting, “We should learn the spirit of Hong Beom-do, a man from the bottom of life, who took up arms when the country was in trouble.”

Actor Cho Jin-woong, who will narrate the film, also attended the press conference and stated, “I hope this becomes an opportunity to reflect on what General Hong Beom-do fought for, and whether we are truly living well standing on their sweat, blood, and lives.”
Regarding the film, the Liberation Association mentioned, “Through the life of General Hong Beom-do, the film aims to shed light on the trajectory of the armed independence struggle and to reconsider the identity of today’s national military,” and stated, “It will emphasize the independence army as a democratic military fighting to establish the foundation of a democratic republic, instead of the guerrilla or partisan images known up to now.”
They continued, “The recent issue of relocating the bust of General Hong Beom-do at the military academy was caused by political soldiers who are descendants of Japanese collaborators,” claiming, “Currently, some political soldiers have degraded the national army into a means to achieve their own interests under the outdated banner of anti-communism.”
