Singer Ailee shared stories about the music she wanted to do since her early days and the message in her new album ‘(Me)moir.’
On the 26th, Ailee appeared on MBC FM4U’s ‘Starry Night with Kim Eana’ and said, “The pop R&B genre I filled in the new album is the music I did before my debut,” adding, “It feels like returning to my roots.”
Ailee stated, “When I debuted and expressed wanting to do pop R&B music, I was told, ‘Make your name more known and then do the music you want,’” and revealed, “Now I feel like it’s time, and I finally grabbed the opportunity.”
That day, after performing the title track ‘MMI’ live, Ailee asked DJ Kim Eana, “Doesn’t this sound seem to fit my original personality better?”
Kim Eana, who knows Ailee well, responded, “This is Ailee’s original personality.”
Regarding this album, Ailee said, “I wanted to show a different side of me. It was easy to listen to and was a relaxed image.”
“My biggest goal was to make comfortable songs to listen to,” she said, explaining, “It’s an album, like an ‘autobiography,’ made to convey the message along with music I love.”
Regarding working with producer Pdogg, she said, “I wasn’t usually close with him,” yet “he played many songs during our studio meeting and I collected the best ones.”
‘MMI’ was originally a song for a group, not a solo.
After that, he sent several songs, and we selected three of the best ones for the album,” she revealed.
About the title track ‘MMI,’ Ailee said, “I think there was a time when I couldn’t truly love myself,” and continued, “Many say ‘You must love yourself,’ but honestly, I think I didn’t quite know how.”
“I am precious.
I am perfect, I am beautiful,” must be repeatedly recited.
That way, like calluses forming, you become a bit stronger each time.
The song contains such a message,” she explained.
Additionally, Ailee shared various stories that day, including the emotional differences she wanted to convey through English lyrics, musical stories about tracks like ‘Illusion,’ ‘Meaning,’ as well as lighthearted everyday tales such as experiencing forearm pain from playing games recently.
