The musical <The Last Empress> is an original musical depicting the story of Empress Myeongseong, the wife of the 26th king of Joseon, Gojong, during a period of upheaval. Premiering in 1995 to mark the 100th anniversary of Empress Myeongseong’s assassination, the work is based on Limun-yeol’s play <Fox Hunt>, with over 50 numbers collaboratively created by legendary composer Kim Hee-gap and lyricist Yang In-ja, receiving much love. In 2007, the musical <The Last Empress> became the first in Korean original musicals to surpass 1 million cumulative audiences, and in 2009, it marked its unprecedented achievement with 1,000 performances.
The 30th Anniversary performance of the musical <The Last Empress> features Kim So-hyun, Shin Young-sook, and Cha Ji-yeon as Empress Myeongseong, Kang Pil-seok, Son Jun-ho, and Kim Ju-taek as Gojong, and Yang Jun-mo, Park Min-seong, and Baek Hyeong-hun as Hong Gye-hoon. It kicks off with local performances at Daegu Keimyung Art Center (from December 10 to December 15) and Busan Dream Theater (from December 20 to December 29), followed by an extensive run at the Grand Theater of Seoul Sejong Center for the Performing Arts from January 21 (Tue) to March 30 (Sun), 2025.
