Hwaseong Special City and Hwaseong City Culture & Tourism Foundation are promoting the ‘2025 Gyeonggi Arts Support : All Art31 Hwaseong’ project, selected the Korean traditional music crossover group ‘Tale(TALE)’. Their performance <Musical Fairy Tale – Time Stopped at Our Home>will be held on September 21(Saturday) at 5 PM, at Dongtan Complex Cultural Center Banseok Art Hall.
‘2025 Gyeonggi Arts Support : All Art31 Hwaseong’is a project to provide vast opportunities for professional cultural art appreciation to citizens of Hwaseong Special City by sponsoring selected works of outstanding artists and artist groups in Gyeonggi-do.
This performance is a new work by ‘Tale(TALE)’, based in Hwaseong City, presented in the form of a musical fairy tale for adults. The work anthropomorphizes a ‘house’built with a couple’s marriage, capturing how the space observes the changes in a family and the era. It symbolizes broader societal issues beyond a mere living space, like population decline, rural extinction, and the problem of abandoned houses.
On stage, folk singer Lee Min-jin, baritone Kim Young-hoon, sheng player Hong Ji-hye, pianist Lee Hyun-jin, drummer Kim Young-jin, bassist Lee Dong-min, and a string quartet join together, with the story unfolding through a vocalist’s narration. Additionally, Ahram Lee, former music director of the National Theater Yeowoorak Festival, directs to create an original stage combining traditional music(folk songs, shamanistic ritual music, japga, etc.)and Western music(requiem, jazz, etc.). Artist Park Yae-ji contributes to the performance by presenting a fairy tale book containing the story.
The performance transcends simple artistic appreciation by conveying a social message that “abandoned houses are no longer someone else’s story”. It evokes childhood family memories while urging love and interest in the abandoned spaces around us.
Tickets can be purchased through Naver reservation, and detailed performance information is available on the Hwaseong City Culture & Tourism Foundation website.
