(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Tae-soo = “Our biggest confidence comes from our hit song. When we say we’re going to perform ‘Rollin”, people cheer for it. Now, we want to create ‘the next’.” (Minyoung)
The girl group BB Girls, formerly known as Brave Girls, debuted as the second generation of Brave Girls in 2016 and have experienced a particularly rollercoaster-like ride in the music industry.
They did not gain much attention for a long period until 2020, when ‘Rollin” gained spotlight and performed a ‘reverse run’ on the charts, leading to a first-place trophy. They continued to receive love with songs like ‘Driving Only’ and ‘Chimatbaram’.
However, after their contract with their previous agency ended, they redebuted in 2023 under the name ‘BB Girls’, and the group was reorganized into a trio after Yujeong left last year.
Minyoung, Eunji, and Yuna, the three members, signed with girl group H1-KEY’s agency GLG and returned on the 15th with a new single ‘Love 2’ after a year and five months.
Meeting BB Girls at a cafe in Gangnam, Seoul recently, they said, “We were a group that gave hope with our (chart reversal),” noting “There was a time when we had our heyday but it’s true we stalled afterwards and felt less confident. Performing gave us confidence and a mindset for preparation.”
The members stated, “Being reorganized into a trio, we would be lying if we said we’re not nervous, excited, or pressured. However, going through a lot of things, the three members became more solid and united. We prepared the new song with a fresh start mindset. We’re confident,” they boldly declared.
The new song ‘Love 2’ is a lively yet sentimental dance-pop track capturing the moment love starts between two people. Produced by Sweetune, who created hit songs for second-generation idols like Kara, Infinite, and Rainbow.
Yuna remarked, “Practicing (the new song), we realized the synergy among the three members was better than we thought.” Eunji added, “The music industry changes so fast these days, so we prepared hard with more tense hearts.”

The departure of Yujeong during the roughly one-and-a-half-year hiatus was a significant change.
“We debuted later than others, so we’re all in our 30s now. We had many worries about life and it was the same after our team succeeded. Ultimately, Yujeong’s intention was the most important, and after a lot of conversations, we decided to respect her decision, leaving three of us.” (Minyoung)
Minyoung expressed some regret by saying, “Not everything goes the way I want,” but also recalled, “We held on during hard times, and didn’t we achieve a comeback as well? Looking at the fans and members who waited and persevered, I gathered myself by saying, ‘We’ll do well again.'”
Minyoung, the eldest member of the group, until recently ran a cafe but closed it within a year. The hardships of self-employment she’d only heard about were greater than expected.
She said, “I want to support self-employed people. I hope many people gain strength. Looking back on past events, they seemed shocking at the time, and I wondered why this was happening to us, but once overcome, it was nothing. It was because I was with (the members), not alone, that I overcame it.”
Yuna, having redebuted with BB Girls two years ago, said she still considers herself a rookie and wants to be called a ‘phoenix-dol’, combining ‘Phoenix’, symbolizing rebirth, with ‘idol’, as it represents the will to rise again at any time.
“In 2021, I attended an awards ceremony but haven’t performed on a year-end stage since. While watching last year’s year-end stages, the members and I said, ‘Let’s definitely go this time.’ I want to perform well this time and stand on the year-end awards stage.” (Eunji)
