100 [Interview②] ONEUS: “Two Rounds of ‘Road to Kingdom,’ It Was Tough but an Opportunity to Grow”

The group ONEUS has shared their honest feelings about reappearing on Road to Kingdom.

On the 14th, ONEUS, who is releasing their special album ‘Dear.M’, met with Ilgan Sports at a café in Jayang-dong, Seoul, and discussed their thoughts on the comeback and introduced their new song.

Last year, they attracted attention by appearing on Mnet’s ‘Road to Kingdom: Ace of Aces’.

It was notable for being their second appearance.

In this regard, Seoho said, “We gained a lot from participating in the competitions twice.

It was both a challenge and a great opportunity for us to grow,” he said.

He continued, “However, the process was definitely tough.

We probably won’t do it three times,” he joked.

Seoho emphasized that “we were able to include our growth in this album since we showed good results in the two competitions.” Gunhee is known to have actively recommended the reappearance to the members.

Regarding this, Gunhee said, “While continuing our activities, I felt grateful, and I had a desire to let more people know that we are a team capable of doing well,” he said. “Rather than someone recommending us to appear, when the company first talked about the next season of ‘Road to Kingdom’, Hwanwoong and I exchanged a glance, and seriously, do you want to try again?

Wouldn’t it be fun to be on stage?

We didn’t talk for long, and we seriously discussed reappearing and asked the head of our management department,” he said.

“The head seemed unaware that we would really go out,” he added.

“He repeatedly confirmed if it was the members’ opinion, and I said on behalf that ‘we have an interest’.”

“Later, the opinion gathered towards wanting to try, so we ended up going out,” he explained. Gunhee said, “One of the things that we felt the most about our development was that, in season 1, our goal was to ‘show a good stage’ but this time, we came out with the goal to ‘really try to win’.

The fact that we could have the goal of winning itself was growth for us, making us confident in our skills,” he said.

He also said, “I was grateful for the fact itself that we could perform on stage in front of many interested people.”

The fact that many people were there to help and give feedback was a grateful experience,” he said. Hwanwoong said, “Even as we continued our activities and participated in the competitions, I realized that despite having produced many albums, there was an ongoing thirst for music and the stage. I felt that despite the difficult times, I really love this job.

There was a subtle emotion of determination and fighting spirit igniting, making me think that ‘I can continue to move forward’.

These were moments of gratitude, thinking that there will be more opportunities to grow in the future,” he added.

Gunhee also said, “I was often asked if the second appearance made us regret or was tough, but the opportunity to perform once was so precious, and it was great that ONEUS was evaluated as performing well again.” Gunhee, who said the feedback he remembers most is “as expected, it’s ONEUS”, added, “Greed seems to have no end.

I still want to try more challenges and leave amazing stages, but I performed without any regrets.” Although they aimed for the win, their final rank was 2nd.

Regarding this, Gunhee said, “Seeing the fans disappointed more than us made me think we did well.

Although our goal was to win, and it could be seen as a failure, being able to leave a great stage without regret was satisfying.

The result of being 2nd may be regretful, but I feel like we gained something more important and precious, so it ended as a valuable experience,” he stated.

Hwanwoong also said, “Although we received the final result as 2nd, we talked among ourselves that it was not 2nd, but runner-up,” and “Although our goal was to win, being the runner-up was something to be thankful for as I felt definite growth compared to our previous appearance.

It seems it was a good stimulant for us till the end, and although it does not feel like a perfect closure, at the same time, I think it will be a catalyst to fulfill it by showing good appearances.

I am sure there will be a time when we will be recognized by more audiences and fans beyond this place.

I think this is not our final ranking, and we will prove it with better performances and stage presence,” he emphasized.

The title track ‘IKUK’ is a rearranged version of ‘I Know You Know’, a final live performance competition song during the appearance on ‘Road to Kingdom: Ace of Aces’.

It is characterized by its funky and groovy sound combined with impressive vocals, illustrating the irresistible temptation of vampires. ONEUS will release the special album ‘Dear.M’ at 6 PM today through various music sites.

They will meet fans at the final performance of their second world tour, ‘La Dolce Vita’ Final in Seoul, held at Daeyang Hall, Sejong University, in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, on February 1-2.
